Every one of us has different times of the day in which our bodies functions at its best.  For a lot of people that time is bright and early in the morning and there is a reason for this: studies have shown that when we work out first thing in the morning it leads to consistency, weight loss and better sleep at night.

There are many reasons why people choose to workout first thing in the morning:

Some do a two hour work-out per day, etc. 1 hour cardio exercises and 1 hour strength training and find that dividing their routine between the morning and evening works well for them, especially if they have to put in a full day at the office as well.

To work out early in the morning is a great way in which to get your metabolism going! You have probably noticed that you are hungry after a work-out. That is because you have burned lots of calories and when you burn the calories early in the morning and replenish it right away, you’re body gets the message that this is how the rest of the day is going to be:  burn/replenish ……

image00003A day at the office can be tough and leave you exhausted with no energy to spare for gym activities when the day is done.  All you want to do is get home and this is usually where a lot of our good intentions of going to the gym every day of the week as part of our new healthy lifestyle, goes out the window. If you work out first thing in the morning, either alone or with the help of a personal trainer, you don’t have to worry about that and believe me – after a good early morning session in the gym you will feel energised and ready to meet the challenges of the day head on! It’s the perfect way to start your day!

When you feel energized and refreshed, you make better decisions – having gone through the trouble of getting up early and going to the gym – you will not want to mess that up. You tend to make better food choices throughout the day, because you simply don’t want to screw it up by indulging in a fattening lunch.

Early morning exercises in the gym

There are two kinds of people – morning people – and those who want to shoot morning people

Not all of us are early birds and if you fall in the last category above – here are some tips that can assist you to make it to the gym bright and early in the morning:

  1. Slowly start to move up your bedtime. Try getting into bed 30 minutes earlier every night for the next week.  Once you’ve reached an earlier time that works well for you, be consistent with going to bed at that specific time every night.  In this way your body clock will get used to crashing as soon as the lights are turned off.
  2. Allow yourself some time to “wake up” and ease into the morning by drinking some coffee, checking your emails, etc. before going to the gym.
  3. Plan ahead the night before – make sure your gym bag is packed and your clothes for work are ready for the next day. You can prepare some breakfast the night before if you need a little fuel before you exercise.
  4. Reward yourself – with something as simple as watching a favourite TV show, getting a manicure or treating yourself to a massage – but only if you have been good and went to the gym that morning/the whole week.
  5. Be consistent in your wake-up time. Avoid “sleeping in” at weekends because it messes with your body’s internal clock.

The most important thing is – even if you still struggle to get up early in the morning – DON’T give up! Be consistent and very soon you will also be the early bird that catches the worm!
